Spring 2016 is inspired by the Banana Republic design team’s trip to Morocco, where they visited Marrakesh, Essaouira, the Atlas Mountains and the famed Berber Trail. The region’s culture and natural wonders ignited the collection’s blend of vibrant colors, bold prints & strong silhouettes.
The design team fell in love with the lively souks of Morocco, drawing inspiration from handmade rugs exploding with saturated colors, textural tile work found in alleyways, and the smell of teas and spices lingering in the air. The coastal town of Essaouira, filled with port houses painted in a wash of white and light blue, inspired striped and nautical themes in the women’s and men’s collections.
The grounds of the Majorelle Gardens, an oasis of tropical blooms in the middle of Marrakesh, with its striking “Majorelle blue” and lemon yellow shades influenced the color pallet and floral motifs in the spring collection. An excursion up the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, with sweeping views of lilac blooms and spring flowers, inspired utilitarian pieces rooted in earthy tones dotted with camouflage and light color.
Traveling camel back along the Berber Trail and through the region’s palm groves, the team experienced the many shades of a desert sunset before visiting the remote mountain village of Chefchaouen – painted entirely in an electrifying blue.
